THOSE WHO WERE BORN OF THE WATERS

The Prairie Island Indian Community welcomes you to Tinta Wita (Prairie Island), the native homeland of the Dakota Oyate (people).

We are descendants of the Bdewakantunwan (Mdewakanton) Band of Eastern Dakota and have lived in what is now Minnesota for countless generations. To the Dakota, it has always been Mni Sota, the land where the water reflects the sky. Our creation story is rooted in the sacred waters that flow nearby. Bdewakantunwan means "those who were born of the waters."

A TRANSFORMATION OF AN ISLAND

It is along the awe-inspiring shores of the Mississippi River that you will find our Tribal gaming business, Treasure Island Resort & Casino, which we’ve proudly operated for more than 40 years.

Treasure Island Resort & Casino has transformed our Tribe and turned Tinta Wita into a destination. Gaming is our new buffalo, providing the Prairie Island Indian Community with the economic means to be a self-sufficient government, improve life on the reservation for our members and preserve our Dakota culture.

TREASURE ISLAND THROUGH THE YEARS

Old Bingo Hall 2 2400x1200
Historic Bingo Caller 1200x800

Island Bingo opened in 1984 as a 1,400-seat, 30,000-square-foot bingo hall. After years of exciting growth, the property transformed into a destination resort and was renamed Treasure Island Resort & Casino in 1995.

Since then, we’ve undergone numerous renovations and expansions to become Minnesota’s premier entertainment and gaming destination, including the addition of the Island Event Center and Island Xtreme Bowl in 2008, Tado Steakhouse in 2015, The Lagoon and Wave Spa in 2016 and the Wolf Tower in 2017.

Most recently, we completed a year-long remodel of the Buffalo Tower in 2026, creating an exceptional guest experience with modern furnishings and elevated room amenities.
